TOPIC: A little rant on exams.

A little rant on exams. 8 years 5 months ago #257788

In a couple of months, I'll have to temporarily leave ZARP as a whole because I have exams coming up.

Exams piss me off greatly. Exams, and schools, are great ideas. But they are executed so horribly that it makes me cringe.

First of all, schools are made to prepare us for life, and exams exist to test our knowledge, and to give us options for further schools, colleges, universities.

Let's first tackle schools. Schools exist, as I said, to prepare us for life. But how do they execute this idea? Very badly.

The people in charge of schools assume that Serbian children need to know everything possible, so if they want to be an employee with any kind of job, they'll be ready. It would be a great idea; if every child had the best mentality in the world, and cannot ever go crazy.

I currently study the following classes:
  • Maths
  • Serbian
  • English
  • Music
  • Arts and Crafts
  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Computer Class
  • P.E.
  • Art (Painting, Drawing)
  • Biology
  • Geography
  • German / French
  • History

I go to Primary School, where kids as young as 6 start going there, and stay there until they're 15. There are 8 grades, and I'm in the 8th grade. Starting from the 7th grade, you must have every single one of these classes in your schedule.

The problem is: Why the fuck would I need any of this?!

Any job in the world, hell, if you think of any job right now, you will find a fault, as any job in the world doesn't need at least half of the knowledge you would gain from these classes. And even worse, I want to be a politician, and literally none of this except for potentially Serbian will ever help me in my job.

And not any school in the world teaches Economics! Which teaches you how to independently run a business, and manage your taxes. And if school fails to prepare you for one of the biggest problems in life, as well as teaching you unneeded shit, then it fails massively.

Also, the mentality: "If a kid is older, then he should get harder things to learn as he is smarter" is just fucking stupid, and I think we can all agree on this using common sense. Hell, I learned how to speak the entire English language correctly when I was 4, so ever since I entered Primary School, English has been a waste of time for me where everyone cheats off of me and I never get anything below an A.

And now, onto exams.

If I ,for example, am already planning to enter a High School primarily focused on Sociology, why am I forced to do exams on Biology, English, Serbian, Maths, etc...?

Enough said.

I'm heartbroken that I'll have to leave you guys in a couple of months for such bullshit. :(

I'm from Croatia and we have the same system as you. I'm the 1st grade of high school or the 9th grade all together and I'm going to a aircraft school and I choose the focus on becoming a mehanic for planes. I still study chemistry, croatian, biology, crazy levels of math which I won't need and history + I have very hard subjects like materials and hardwar and aviation laws and more, not to mention that our proffesors don't look for knowlage but they just want you to know everything by hart.

You get all those subjects so you have seen a wide range of different types of subjects (physical, technical, languages, maths, ...) so you can have a good view on what you like and don't like, and what your strong subjects are and what aren't. With this knowledge you can decide what to do next and which type of subject you want to specialise in. The concept of school isn't bullshit, the execution is.

And what if I am already certain of what I like, since I spent already too many years "picking what I like"?

I want to be a politician, and I don't want to stall that wish with mindless nonsense.

Many of my friends already know what they want to be in fact.

EDIT: A better system to this is to have a similar system with a lot of classes, but when we're younger, and we choose what we like the most, and in Primary School, we only study the subject we picked, with additional choices of other classes only if the student wishes to learn more things. And it gets harder for the student as he gets older, but far harder because he is only studying one class, and so he can maximize his potential.

This has been suggested many times before and the outcome was always the same as far as I know: No, they can't implement systems like this because not everyone who enters primary school is mature enough to decide where his future lies, causing irrational and stupid decisions which can result eventually in dropping out. No country wants an increased amount of drop outs as they're a potential threat to the economy if they don't pick themselves up. Might seem far-fetched to some, but don't forget that after all we're talking about kids who are entering puberty thus easily influenced.

EDIT: I just noticed "And no school in the world teaches economics' in the original thread, my high school taught Economics, which is the class I took.

Okay. But what about the problem we always see: "What if I already know what I want to be, and I am already studying by myself the essentials of the job I want to become?"

Besides, it is possible to do it, but high discipline and order would be needed with our children.

EDIT: Okay, you had it, but most schools don't, and it should be essential to all people as it's something everyone has to deal with.

Then it is not a problem but an opportunity to stand out. By studying for things that you think are important later on you get an edge over the other kids who have the same diploma, but then finish with less knowledge than you. And I'm fairly sure there are economics-teaching schools all across the world (allow me to generalise like you).

Excuse my random grammar/spelling mistakes, been studying all day for 4 weeks straight at the time of writing.

- Yes, it is a problem, because it holds the special kids back from a job and steady income to help their family out. And having more overall knowledge is worse than knowing the most you can about one specific subject, as it can maximize your potential, and can allow you to do better things, that most geniuses do.

- Yes, there are economic schools all around the world, but what if I don't want to go to an economic school, but rather to another school I like more? Tax Management and Independent Businesses are something everyone should know, because everyone, no matter at which school they gone, must manage taxes and their economies.

I cba to continue this for long, so here are 2 videos explaining a lot.
