Jesus Christ, if you don't want to watch anime; don't watch it then.
It's not like someone is controlling you to do so.
If that guy is bugging you, show him the one, two.
Anyways, if you want to start how I started; watch "Highschool of the Dead".
Or Durarara!!, Psycho-Pass, Shigatsu wa kimi no uso, Ao no Excorist, Fate/stay series, Darker than Black , Steins;Gate, Future Diary or Gangsta. .

Ryryster,I finally actually agree with you; you actually developed a sense of maturity over the past months.

People hate anime for stupid reasons, one being that they never even watched it.

You called?
If you want people to recommend you Anime, it'd be better if you give us more information, like any specific genre's, themes, etc. Here are a couple of anime per genre and a small synopsis with my thoughts on them that you may enjoy.
It's perfectly understandable that you came with prejudices when it came to anime. Nowadays in Western culture, anything that is drawn and animated is often assigned as childish, unless it's something like Family Guy or Southpark. People usually think that the only "cartoons" that are made are for children. Oh how wrong and ignorant they are.
Just a quick warning, Anime isn't something you can simply watch and immediately understand the culture, references, and what the Japanese accept as "normal" and "too much" (if there even is a too much). If you do not like the idea of nudity in any way, stray from anime labeled as "Ecchi".
I highly recommend you stay away from anime like Tokyo Ghoul, Sword Art Online, Attack on Titan and Mirai Nikki. As much as people claim them to be good, it's mostly because they only view it as-is. They don't look more indepth, and think that just because it has action and decent animation, it is immediately a masterpiece (yes, there are seriously people who think that. A lot of them even). I have tried to go as much for Action anime right now, but do note that anime, atleast in my opinion, truly shines when the story isn't getting distracted with too much action, although there are some that manage to use the action really well (like the 2nd and 4th anime on the list I'm giving). Also keep in mind that unlike movies and western TV shows, the synopsis for most anime barely scratch the surface when it comes to its plot, characters, and a lot of other things.
Now without further ado, here are 5 pretty good anime I suggest you give a try, consisting of anime that are a mix of action, intelligent wordplay, anime with deep meanings that you can see if you look and listen well enough, and characters that are genuinely fun to watch and you can feel for.
Bakemonogatari (The Monogatari Series): Genre's: Mystery, Romance, Supernatural, Vampire, Ecchi
Synopsis:
Warning: Spoiler![ Click to expand ][ Click to hide ]
Thanks to Meme Oshino, Koyomi Araragi, a high school student, is able to remain a human after coming across a female vampire. However, since the incident, Koyomi seems to meet girls who have an apparition-related issue. Hitagi Senjougahara doesn't weigh anything. Suruga Kanbaru’s left arm resembles that of a monkey’s. Nadeko Sengoku was afflicted by curses from her classmates. Mayoi Hachikuji, a young girl who cannot find her way home no matter how many times she tries. Koyomi, a Mr. Nice Guy, ends up helping each and every girl solve her problem with the help of Meme Oshino.
The Bakemonogatari is a series of stories involving Araragi, a half-vampire. Bakemonogatari is it's first season, and it's about his encounters with several people after certain events happened to him in Golden Week (a Japanese holiday), turning him into a vampire. The girls he meet all have different problems involving apparitions, which are something along the line of ghosts.
The Monogatari Series is my personal favorite anime. The characters are all pretty awesome, get good development and are all unique. They may appear to follow the cliche anime character tropes at first, but they diverge from that. The stories are interesting from start to finish, the animation is absolutely amazing, albeit it a bit weird for someone who is completely new to the artform that is Anime. Did I mention that they speak atleast 20 words a' second, if not faster?
Do note that Bakemonogatari is it's first season, and they don't simply do "season 2" behind it. Every season (except for Monogatari Series Second Season, which is actually the 4th season) has a different name. The correct order to watch this series in is "Bakemonogatari -> Nisemonogatari -> Nekomonogatari (Kuro) -> Monogatari Series Second Season -> Hanamonogatatari -> Tsukimonogatari -> Owarimonogatari (not out yet) -> Kizumonogatari (not out yet)". Do keep this in mind.

Keep in mind that this is the trailer for the final season, which is coming out next week. It doesn't spoil a lot about the main plot, but it sure gives me the chills every time I watch it (in a good way)
Fate/stay night (Fate Series) Genre's: Action, Fantasy, Magic, Shounen, Supernatural
Synopsis:
Warning: Spoiler![ Click to expand ][ Click to hide ]
Fuyuki City—a city surrounded by the ocean and the mountains becomes the setting for an age-old ritual. To realize the mythical Holy Grail, which is said to grant any wish from its possessor, seven masters are given seven heroic spirits chosen by the Grail. These heroic spirits or servants are: Saber, Lancer, Archer, Rider, Caster, Assassin, Berserker.
Each master will enter into a contract with their assigned servants and battle the other masters and servants to the death until only one pair remains...
This is the "Holy Grail War."
This story focuses primarily on the heroine Rin Toosaka. After her father's death, Rin enters the Holy Grail War as the sole heir to the prestigious Toosaka Household, with her servant Archer. But, she soon finds out that Shirou Emiya, a boy from her high school has gotten himself involved in the battles and unexpectedly saves him when he is fatally injured.
Before long, Rin sets out to strike down the conspiracies surrounding the Holy Grail War along with Shirou and his summoned servant Saber. And so, the story begins to explore the truth behind Shirou’s powers and the nature behind his unyielding will to become a "hero."
In my opinion, Fate/stay night is an absolutely amazing piece of art. The visual novel that is. The anime is pretty good on it's own, with amazing animation (no seriously, it's probably the best animation that has ever come out), a kickass soundtrack and some pretty good character development (albeit it not as good as the visual novel, but I digress). This is the kind of anime that drag in a lot of people, as it both looks good and is definitely above-average when it comes to it's storytelling. If you still think anime is for kids, that will most likely end with this franchise.
Keep in mind that Fate/stay night [Unlimited Blade Works] (this anime) is only one of several entries of this series, much like Bakemonogatari. The correct order to watch this in is "Fate/stay night: Fate Route (got a shitty adaptation, you can skip it) -> Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works (make sure you watch the TV series and not the movie) -> Fate/stay night: Heaven's Feel (not out yet) -> Fate/Zero".
In my opinion, Fate/Zero is the absolute best of the best when it comes to anime, and you can watch it separately from Fate/stay night, but I do not advice that. Fate/Zero and Fate/stay night kinda spoil eachother, but Fate/Zero spoils a lot more of Fate/stay night than vice versa. To be honest though, Fate/Zero is one of the anime I can confidently call an actual masterpiece of art, and not just in its artstyle and animation.
Trailer/Openings: (Do note that the first trailer contains slight Fate/Zero spoilers)

Durarara!! Genre's: Action, Mystery, Supernatural
Synopsis:
Warning: Spoiler![ Click to expand ][ Click to hide ]
In Tokyo's downtown district of Ikebukuro, amidst many strange rumors and warnings of anonymous gangs and dangerous occupants, one urban legend stands out above the rest—the existence of a headless "Black Rider" who is said to be seen driving a jet-black motorcycle through the city streets.
Ryuugamine Mikado has always longed for the excitement of the city life, and an invitation from a childhood friend convinces him to move to Tokyo. Witnessing the Black Rider on his first day in the city, his wishes already seem to have been granted. But as supernatural events begin to occur, ordinary citizens like himself, along with Ikebukuro's most colorful inhabitants, are mixed up in the commotion breaking out in their city.
Durarara!! is another anime I absolutely enjoy watching. It's about gangwars, mixed in with a bit of supernatural. A city that is in a constant state of danger, where you follow the daily lives from normal High school students, to an underground doctor who is hiding a supernatural being, to an information broker that can manipulate whoever he wants and however he desires. Although it does take 10 episodes for the plot to really kick in, you'll sure be going for a ride, with plot twists you absolutely would not expect, to a satisfying ending for it's first season, which, even if its second season weren't announced, would still be a pretty good way to end it.
Durarara!! may not be the best anime, but it's one that is rather well-known and has enough suspense and mystery in it to pull in any kind of media viewer. Do keep in mind that the way it tells the stories of the characters a bit different than usual anime and TV shows do. They first show the conclusion of the episode from a rather outsider-perspective, and then show how the characters involved got into that situation, from a different person's perspective. It may be confusing at times if you don't pay attention, but all in all it's a good watch, and one you'll most certainly enjoy.

The world consists of two parts: the near shore and far shore. The near shore is the place where people reside, while the far shore is the place for deities and ayakashi, which are emotional fragments that can posses humans and cause trouble. So it is a deity's responsibility to remove those ayakashi from the near shore with the help of weapons called Shinki, made from the spirits of dead people.
Yato is a minor deity of war without shrine. Together with his Shinki, Tomone, he runs a Delivery Wish Granting Service, granting wishes for only 5 yen. After his Shinki leaves him on less than agreeable terms, he decides to run simple errands that do not involve ayakashi-related matters. While on a mission to find a lost kitten, he is nearly hit by a bus, but saved by a girl named Iki Hiyori. Hiyori dies for a moment, but then comes back to life. This, however, causes Hiyori's soul to become unstable, leaving her body frequently. So by offering 5 yen, she asks Yato to fix her body... but Yato cannot help without a Shinki, so Hiyori accompanies him on his journey to find one, in the hopes of becoming normal again. But behind Yato's kind-hearted face lies a twisted past...
Noragami is just awesome. That's literally all I think of when I see it. Bones, which after this anime and another one that came out recently (and ofcourse a couple that most people see masterpieces), is one of my absolute favorite studios. The supernatural elements are done absolutely fantasticly, the action is well-choreographed and doesn't feel like it's there just to have some action, and the characters. The characters are just so much fun to watch. And the Opening. The Opening is absolutely gorgeous.
If you'd rather not watch anime week-by-week, it might be better for you to not start with this one. Noragami's second season is gonna start airing next week, and boy is the hype real.

Working!! Genre's: Comedy, Slice of Life
Synposis:
Warning: Spoiler![ Click to expand ][ Click to hide ]
Due to his love for small, cute things, Souta Takanashi cannot turn childlike Popura Taneshima down when she recruits him to work for Wagnaria, a family restaurant located in Hokkaido. Takanashi takes particular joy in doting on the older Popura, which only fuels her complex over how young she looks. He also quickly learns he must stay on his toes once he meets the rest of his colleagues, including the katana-wielding floor chief Yachiyo Todoroki, the intimidating head chef Jun Satou, the dangerously well-informed and subtly sadistic sous chef Hiroomi Souma, the adamantly lazy manager Kyouko Shirafuji, and the waitress Mahiru Inami who has a "painful" fear of men.
Powered by an eccentric cast, Working!! is a unique workplace comedy that follows the never-dull happenings within the walls of Wagnaria as Takanashi and his co-workers' quirky personalities combine to create non-stop antics, shenanigans, and hilarity.
I'm going to be honest with you here. I had a tough time deciding what the 5th anime I'd recommend would be. In the end, I've decided to go for a comedy anime for variety's sake, and because this anime is so unpopular (views-wise), which is something it absolutely does not deserve. This here, ladies and gentlemen, is an anime with quality comedy, character development (which is quite rare for comedy anime), and an amazing cast to back it all up. Also, did I mention that it has a closed ending, which is also quite unlike most comedy anime?
Working!! was a killer Comedy/Slice-of-Life anime that I underestimated when I first started watching it. It's pretty amazing, and for a beginner it's also quite watchable. Granted, the comedy the Japanese enjoy is a lot different from the Western culture, but Working!! is the perfect anime to get to learn the jokes and anime tropes a little. Also, it's a lot of fun.
