This was actually... considerably harder than I thought it would be. But I'm gonna out myself as a bit of a weeb here, and say Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star.

One of the very few characters in fiction to carry the stoic, man-of-few-words type without it seeming overly edgy. He was also one of the first characters in Japanese fiction to bring male emotion into the forefront, even if it was restrained into the meme of "manly tears."
Kenshiro's not invincible, nor is he perfect, but he's a character with a tragic history, and carries himself with a certain humility and strength that a lot of characters can't attest to, nowadays.
