So since I've resigned from being an Administrator I have seen various situations where people are banned for far less time then needed.
The reason I'm making this proposal is because we
ALL have to remember that we are a community and by banning a player from one of our servers it helps us keep a consistent playerbase as less people are likely to leave because of the server being full of rulebreakers.
Currently banning someone for (8) recent punishments is 1 day at TTT. In this case while it is ultimately up to the admin to decide i find it unacceptable. A 1 day ban is useless, the banned player will just come back the next day and most likely continue to rulebreak, at the very least a 3 day ban should be the norm for this.
Although, I have seen people banning for way longer for recents, which depending on the banned users rapsheet and situation is perfectly fine. Once we ban a person for a long amount of time they tend not to come back due to the amount of time they were banned for, which is good for the server. The kind of players that rulebreak and don't come back from a ban are the kind of players who will not change and will continue to cause issues for other players on the server, it is for the best that they do not come back.
Yes users that have been banned before should get more time as they are aware of the rules.
My proposal for all servers:
- Look at what they have done before banning. All admins should be doing this already but pay attention to what they were punished for, look for previous bans, punishments for disrespect, false punishments(mutes/gags with no reason), these factors should help you decide how long they should be banned for.
- Do not give them a warning that their next punishment will result in a ban. I know it may seem like a nice thing to do but it causes way more problems then it is worth. Issues tend to arise as there is no way to know who has been told this and who has not and from experience has lead to situations where players have been told there next warning will be a ban however get banned without receiving another warning as there was no way to know, which is very unfair for users. Not only that but it often leads to the player getting multiple warnings when they should have just been banned a long time ago. If you want to warn someone about their recents do it before it is a bannable amount.
- By all means be more lenient towards new players. If they do not understand certain rules it may be best to simply explain it to them and let them off with a verbal warning. There is a point however when despite them being a new player you have to understand that they are ruining the experience of other players, if they continue to break rules then they should face the same bans as everyone else. If they have enough recents to be banned they should not be seen as a new player anymore because they have had plenty of chances to read the rules.
- Think before you ban and don't go around with the banhammer because you feel like it
