Personally, I think money sinks are always a good thing; but this is also why I'm not just suggesting weapons, that you could always add items into the mix too. Collectibles have become very popular, even those that aren't necessarily collectible - I think even if we added these into the game, giving them a cap on how strong they are and making them more novelty than anything else might be more suitable.
It may also be interesting to find ways to make them accessible through actual challenges and tasks, like the quests from a few years ago, revamped into new and exciting things.
