N.B: I'm sure many of you saw my head application for bhop yesterday. In line with this I am intending on carrying out the same form of project on both servers as they are similar and as such improvements and developments can easily be applied to both. With the permission of Onion, I am applying for Super Admin on surf in the same week as my Head Admin on bhop appication; I hope this is satisfactory for you all. I understand people may critise me for this but I believe I am capable of providing the best possible service on both servers whilst developing them in a forward thinking manner, I hope you can support me in this.
How do you feel that your time as an administrator has contributed to becoming a super administrator:
I have been an extremely active surf staff, participating actively in all the meetings and proactively finding improvements, maps and ideas to expand the server. Alongside this I feel like I am a great ambassador for the server and have a presence on other zarp servers, the forums, the discord and the team speak. I’m well respected in the zarp surf community and feel like I can give more to improve this great scene.
What makes you a good candidate for the super administrator team? ( in this part you can go as detailed as you want):
My vast gmod experience will lend itself to a new role in the LT. I’ve been playing gmod since I was 14, owned servers, managed teams, created addons and developed features. Due to this I believe I have the ability to effectively liaison with server teams and developer teams in order to improve the server in a multitude of ways and communicate problems efficiently. I intend to carry out similar work on surf as I am on bhop as outlined in my head admin application.
Explain a situation as an administrator you encountered that was an obstacle that required the help of a lead team member but you had to work around it when no lead team member was available:
Overall the staff team on surf is excellent and have had no problems with any of them. Team meetings are productive and as such issues do not occur. Bans and such are discussed within the team and there is a very healthy atmosphere amongst my peers.
Explain how you would review and handle an abuse report against another staff member:
Depending on the severity of the abuse and the veracity of the events I believe it would be important to discuss with the other members of the lead team in case the action questioned the staff members place on the team. Otherwise, I believe running through this with a witness as well as the reporter, in order to understand the exact events, as it would help me understand how to approach creating change in that staff members manner. Various outcomes from a quick chat, retraining or demotion come to mind but all very much depend on the event.
Explain in detail how you would act in the following situation:
A staff member bans a user for an excessive amount of time, how do you approach the staff member to ensure that everyone is treated fairly?
Talk to the staff member and run through what happened in the incident just to check that this wasn’t any exceptional circumstances that required a lengthier ban. If not, I believe it would be relevant to run through the ban guidelines to make sure they’re aware of the correct punishments to give out in specific situations. Following this I would reduce the ban and contact the user in question to let them know that the ban had been reduced.
Step by Step:
I'd discuss with this staff member exactly what ban lengths we hand out and make sure he understood why and what actions constituted to what ban lengths. Once he was comfortable with this, I'd adjust the ban and let the banned user know of the change. Following this I would monitor this staff member actively and make sure they were handling other situations well; making sure to get the other staff members to try and help him if he's unsure and to report back to me if they see that same staff member struggling to understand what he should be doing again.
Explain in detail how you would act in the following situation:
A staff member is dealing with a user but is struggling to do so in an appropriate manner. How would you resolve the situation?
I believe there’s two scenarios based on what side of the scale the inappropriateness is so I’ll run through both. If they were taking it too seriously and being too harsh on the player base, I’d take them aside and chat to them in order to get them to cool it down a little. At the end of the day staff roles are volunteer roles and I believe our staff members should enjoy what they do and shouldn’t have to experience stress, that’s not their purpose. I believe the same would be said of the second scenario, where instead they were not taking any responsibility and causing havoc on the server. This lack of care and inability to take their role seriously would also cause me to take them aside and get them to consider their actions and responsibilities. If both continued, I’d believe a serious examination of the persons position on the team would be required.
Step by Step:
After seeing a staff member struggling with handling a situation appropriately, I would pull them into a call and discuss with them how I'd handle such a situation, why we handle it that way and why we shouldn't handle the situation the way it was being handled by him. After clarifying our expectations, I would expect him back on the server and handling the incident properly in the manner expected. Following this I would monitor this staff member actively and make sure they were handling other situations well; making sure to get the other staff members to try and help him if he's unsure and to report back to me if they see that same staff member behaving poorly again.
Explain in detail how you would act in the following situation:
A staff member accuses another staff member of breaking rules, how would you help resolve the situation?
I would prefer if this could be resolved internally by getting both staff members in a call and talking through both of their perspectives. Hopefully this would come to some resolution of one party agreeing with the other and discussing with the other party on why it is that way. Keeping this internal among the staff team is important as discourse around such a topic shouldn’t stray into the public eye. It puts unnecessary strain and focus on both staff members with no need. I believe the LT should do the job of protecting and looking out for their staff team in this manner in order to creative an effective team environment.
Step by Step:
Pull the rule breaking staff member into the call and ask him why he thinks what he's doing is acceptable and tell him that is not what expected of our staff members. Next, I would contact Mixers to make him aware and to see if this action warranted review or retraining of the staff member. Over the next week this member would be monitored and a meeting to follow up this would be arranged to check the progress of this staff member. I would also be sure to thank the reporting staff member for reporting a fellow staff member as they are not above the rules.
Explain in detail how you would act in the following situation:
A staff member acts in a disrespectful manner towards another staff member and or sparks an argument within the staff team. How do you resolve the situation?
I believe this situation is very similar to the above one, but more serious and is perfect to address in the staff meeting. In the time between the event and the meeting I’d discuss with both sides what happened and get them to take a bit of time to cool off and reflect on the scenario. This should give them time before the meeting to come in with a level head and come to a civil agreement. The main thing for me is that this kind of event should be kept within the staff community to avoid any trolling or provocation by certain community members who would no doubt love to stir shit up.
Step by Step:
I would pull all involved staff members into a call to try and calm things down and to get them to relax and discuss exactly what was happening and where any issues were. After clearing the air and understand the issue I'd explain to the relevant parties what my perspective was and how we could resolve the situation from here. Once I made sure that everyone was happy, they'd be allowed to leave. In the coming up staff meeting I would mention this and discuss the importance of us being a team and communicating well, I'd also talk about how every team has issues and it's how we resolve these issues and productively build of these events that makes the difference.
Explain in detail how you would act in the following situation:
You spot a staff member breaking rules to the point of harming other users, how do you approach the staff member?
I believe actions that harm our users are very serious and would discuss with fellow lead team members immediately as I’d question their place on the staff team. From my perspective there is no circumstance where the staff members should be harming our users and any such actions should be treated with the upmost severity.
Step by Step:
In such event I would firstly pull them into a call and ask them what they were doing and that such behaviour is not acceptable and tell them to stop immediately as that is not what is expected of staff. Next, I would contact Mixers to make him aware and to see if this action warranted suspension of the staff member. If not, I believe some form of retraining alongside a watchful eye over the next week with a meeting follow up with said staff member and Mixers would be useful to ensure such behaviour wouldn't happen again.
