It takes a bit to get used to, took me about a day and you have to tamper with the settings for a bit.
Also, try looking up a tutorial on how to set it up.
Ik the blank screen thing, happened to me and my friends when we first got OBS as well.

Plays.TV is the best one by far. There's no system lag and its easy to use (Unlike OBS), its totally free and includes and editor as well as a video-sharing website integrated in it letting you cut and upload videos with ease.
