As a Belgian I can confirm that this is pure bullshit. Cops only get involved if you get busted doing illegal stuff like dealing drugs or stealing stuff from fellow students. If you're in a tight school the principal might call your parents to have a chat with you and scare you, but never the cops.

There was a lass in my year at school who didn't show for four years because of a disorder she had. She returned for the two last senior years of the school and even then barely showed up. In these two final years, if your attendance drops to a certain percentage, you got kicked out.
