At least 125 people have been killed and about 150 injured in an explosion claimed by the so-called Islamic State group in Baghdad, Iraqi police say. On the busy street's of the Karrada district, a car bomb exploded in the central area this Saturday. The mainly Shia area was busy with shoppers late at night because it is the holy month of Ramadan. Following the first bomb, a second explosion went off at about midnight in a predominantly Shia area north of the capital, killing another five people. The bombing in Karrada is the deadliest in Iraq this year and comes a week after Iraqi security forces recaptured the city of Falluja from Islamic State (IS) militants. Many of those killed were children, Associated Press reported. Families gathered on the street on Sunday for news of missing loved ones.
At least 55 people have been killed in northern Pakistan and India in flash floods and landslides triggered by heavy monsoon rains. Flash floods hit the village of Arsun, in Chitral, overnight from Saturday to Sunday. In northern India, officials said the death toll after Friday's heavy rains caused flooding and landslides had risen to 15 in Uttarakhand and 10 in Arunachal Pradesh. Several villages have been buried and a national highway is partially blocked. Residents said that flooding washed away 37 houses and damaged another 48. The military’s public relations office said food, tents and medical aid was being provided to those who were in need.
Left 4 Dead 3 Potential Tease
It may not be Half-Life 3 but still. Any Valve game with a '3' in it is good news regardless. In this case, a slight hint of there being a Left 4 Dead 3 is very likely, as it was teased in one of the screenshots of a Valve employee's folder directory. A Valve fansite that goes by the name of ValveTime has posted a screenshot that was taken from a tutorial. The tutorial was made by Valve artist Tristan Reidford. In the screenshot, the 'left4dead3' folder can be seen on the left marked under the 'Favorites' section.
The following day, the screenshot had been removed and replaced by a similar screenshot without the 'left4dead3' folder visible. Although it did seem like the screenshot was not accidental, seeing as though the scrollbar was set to halfway down. But who knows, this could be Valve's clever way to tease their upcoming title. With Valve planning on releasing a revamped Source engine, expect to see this new Left 4 Dead running on this new engine.
Skyrim Mod 'Enderal' Releases Soon
Enderal: The Shards of Order is a fan-made total conversion mod for Skyrim. The mod has been in development since the launch of Skyrim back in 2011 and is being developed by a group called SureAI, the same team responsible for Oblivion's total conversion mod Nehrim. Enderal is an entirely open world RPG, complete with new environments, art, voice acting, quests, and more.
For those who already own Skyrim on the PC, you're in luck. The mod will be completely free. It will be releasing in Germany this following week, with an English language release to follow in the upcoming weeks. Here we have a trailer for what to expect, though the language is in German with English subtitles giving you a glimpse of how Enderal will play. Enjoy.
Oculus Removes DRM Policy
Since the launch of virtual reality earlier this year, the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift have been battling for their dominance on the PC market. In recent attempts to protect their intellectual properties in hopes of increasing sales, Oculus went down the route of exclusivity and DRM. This meant that their digital platform 'Oculus VR' would only be exclusive to Oculus Rift users. This caused a lot of problems in the VR community as users with other VR headsets were not able to play certain games, due to exclusivity. Not to mention the fact that Oculus had reached out to individual developers and provided them the funds for developing their games in return for making the game exclusive to the Oculus franchise.
The battle for an open VR gaming market has been ongoing in the past few months. A hack called ReVive was made to tackle this exclusivity issue by bypassing any hardware integrity checks performed by the Oculus Store, allowing any user to run Oculus exclusive titles on any VR headset they prefer. Valve also had a say in this, in which they promise that they will plan on paying developers more than what Oculus would for funding in return for promising an open platform VR title.
Surprisingly, this didn't last very long. Oculus VR has dropped the "platform integrity check" on their software, which was a DRM policy that prevented Oculus Store apps running without the presence of an Oculus Rift headset. Oculus pledges on not bringing this system back. Although no indication was made on why the change was made, it seemed like Oculus has no choice. With the community creating hacks to bypass their policies and their rival company Valve promising a higher payout to devs, it seemed like Oculus had no choice but to comply. Overall, a big victory in the VR industry for a more open and border-free VR experience.
Why would anyone pay such a high price for valuables? You might ask yourself that question various times while looking at the staggering price tag adhered to those items. A pair of iconic items from Prince's Purple Rain wardrobe both sold for far more than expected at a Los Angeles auction, with the late singer's white ruffled shirt and black-and-white, leather-sleeved blazer from the 1984 film selling for $96,000 each. The auction estimate for the items was $6,000 to $8,000 apiece.
Apple has some aggressive ways of getting their "fair" share of App tax. This is the latest development in a major fallout between the two companies that started off technical but is getting increasingly ill-tempered. The outcome stands to have serious consequences for music rightsholders everywhere. Some context: Spotify has long hated Apple’s stipulation that 30% of any new subscription secured through an iOS app is retained by the Cupertino giant. Along with other third-party app makers such as Pandora, Spotify regards this as a punishing and greedy ‘app tax’ on its growing yet loss-making business.
