Alright so today I did my Mental Capacity Act and DoLS Training and there was some cases we studied and it made me genuinely wonder how people who have no background in Social Support, Behavioral Issue or even Support work would react to the questions. I will provide a enough information about the case that you can get a genuine idea of their capacity before being asset and then it will be followed by a question. I just want to hear what you would do or what you would say in the situation without having to do research and or asking people.
DoLS - The Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards are an amendment to the Mental Capacity Act 2005. They apply in England and Wales only. The Mental Capacity Act allows restraint and restrictions to be used – but only if they are in a person's best interests. MCA - The Mental Capacity Act (MCA) 2005 applies to everyone involved in the care, treatment and support of people aged 16 and over living in England and Wales who are unable to make all or some decisions for themselves. The MCA is designed to protect and restore power to those vulnerable people who lack capacity. Case Study 1 John John has a mild learning disability, His support worker Emma is worried that he is having an unhealthy diet and this is leading to his diabetes getting worse. Emma discusses her concerns with her Manager and they decide that the best way forward is to assess whether John has capacity to make the day to day decisions regarding his diet. The Information can then be shared with his Care Manager and dietitian so his support plan can be updated. Question 1 How would you assess John's Capacity each meal time? Question 2 How would you ensure John had a choice of food he likes on occasions he was not able to express his preferences? |

If you're in America (Viva la Morgan) you'll most likely end up throwing them on the streets. Believe me, I don't like it, but it's the cold hard truth.

Ah yes, America doesn't have a great tolerance for people with disabilities my X works in the Government over there providing Financial aid to care companies and some of the stuff she as told me about what happens is horrible. When they close a house or a hospital they do usually end up on the street or in prison. |

Question 1
Warning: Spoiler! [ Click to expand ][ Click to hide ] Firstly, pass john a piece of paper with Monday through Friday on it and a pen. Ask him to write down what he would like to eat for each meal of the day. Assessing this, you can gather information about what john might eat on a regular basis. From this we can start to advise why some meals could be unhealthy for him, considering his condition. Following up on this we can set a task for john and place healthy and unhealthy meals onto a table and asking him to separate them into the two categories. This can show that John does know what is healthy for him and what is not, if he is correct then more work can be put into explaining why it is essential for people to have healthy meals regularly. However, if John does not split the meals up into the correct categories then educating him about what makes a meal healthy or unhealthy is the best course of action. And so on... The main thing to work on is educating about the importance of health meals. Question 2 Warning: Spoiler! [ Click to expand ][ Click to hide ] Making a visual food chart could be extremely helpful for someone that has difficulty with making decisions. Something like this :
where he could see and plan exactly what he is eating for the week could help him to organize and understand that it is okay to have some unhealthy meals, as long as you have a balanced diet. When John has selected what he would like for the week, points could be allocated for each meal that is chosen. Once meals have been allocated their points, a rewards system could be put in place where points can be saved up and spent on a treat or a cheat day, where he eats whatever he wants. (given that it works with his diabetes) Once all of this is introduces it would hopefully break the habit of living an unhealthy lifestyle, and keep him trying to eat healthily. Yeh I was bored so decided to join in on this. Therapy has been something that I've had close experience with for a long time and for a while considered it as a career path. Probably better ways of helping out our good ol friend John over here, but that's how I would first go about the situation I guess. ![]() |

How would you assess John's Capacity each meal time? Need too see wha't he eat first, then try to cange his meal and have a good one everyday. Question 2 How would you ensure John had a choice of food he likes on occasions he was not able to express his preferences? I don't care if he don't like it, its for his life if he don't eat a good meal he can die or get sick. Im just a 15 year old kid if the answers are bad plz do not insult me please. |
