Bill Russell died yesterday at the age of 88.
I thought I wouldn't write a post about his passing, however he is the man who transformed the sport I love the most in the word, basketball. He was much more than an athlete, he stood side by side with Martin Luther King, protested against racism and discrimination and he supported Muhammad Ali. Bill had to go through racism, insults and vandalism during his time, he still managed to win 11 chips. He kept focusing on the game and his teammates who he said "I don't care what happens, I wouldn't trade you guys for any guy in the word" after winning the 1969 NBA finals. His legacy lives on after the NBA decided to put his name on the NBA finals MVP award and beyond. This man means a lot to me, I wanted to write this post to pay tribute to the ultimate American sport champion. Rest in peace Bill Russell |
