The economic history of the United Kingdom relates the economic development in the British Isles from the absorption of Wales into England after 1535 to the early 21st century.
During this period there were major changes in the structure of the United Kingdom which are essential features of both its economic development and the interpretation of this. Scotland and England (& Wales) shared a monarch from 1601 and, with Ireland, existed as a unitary Republic, the Commonwealth, between 1653 and 1659. A unified economy of England and Scotland only came into being by the Act of Union of 1707 that declared the two countries were "United into One Kingdom by the Name of Great Britain". Between 1801 and 1921 the United Kingdom incorporated Ireland until the Irish Free State declared its independence; the Union was now reduced to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. (See also Economy of England in the Middle Ages and the Economic history of Scotland and Economic History of Ireland). These boundary changes require historians to make careful use of data and definitions to ensure correspondence between the appropriate geographical unit, the relevant information and interpretations of historical trends.
Britain, and England in particular, became one of the most prosperous economic regions in Europe between 1600 and 1700, Industrialisation in the UK from the mid-eighteenth century resulted in economic developments described by many historians as the British industrial revolution. These developments resulted in the United Kingdom becoming the premier economy in Europe during the first half of the 19th century, the most prominent industrial power in the world economy and a major political entity. Its industrialists were major innovators in machinery such as steam engines (for pumps, factories, railway locomotives and steamships), textile equipment, and tool-making. Britons pioneered the railway system and built much of the equipment sold to other nations. Its businessmen were leaders in international commerce and banking, trade and shipping. Seizure of territories by British military forces and preferential trade granted between occupied territories and Britain resulted in the global British Empire. After 1840, an economic policy of mercantilism was abandoned and replaced by "free trade," with few tariffs, quotas or restrictions. The powerful Royal Navy protected British interests, shipping and international trade, while the British legal system provided a system for resolving disputes relatively inexpensively, and the City of London functioned as the economic capital and focus of the world economy.
Between 1870 and 1900, economic output per head of population of the United Kingdom rose by 50 percent (from about £28 per capita to £41 in 1900: an annual average increase in real incomes of 1% p.a.), growth which was associated with a significant rise in living standards. However, and despite this significant economic growth, some economic historians have suggested that Britain experienced a relative economic decline in the last third of the nineteenth century as industrial expansion occurred in the United States and Germany. In 1870, Britain's output per head was the second highest in the world, surpassed only by Australia. In 1914, British income per capita was the world's third highest, exceeded only by New Zealand and Australia; these three countries shared a common economic, social and cultural heritage. In 1950, British output per head was still 30 percent above of the six founder members of the EEC, but within 20 years it had been overtaken by the majority of western European economies.
The response of successive British governments to this problematic performance was to seek economic growth stimuli within what became the European Union; Britain entered the European Community in 1973. Thereafter the United Kingdom's relative economic performance improved substantially to the extent that, on the eve of the 2007 crisis, British income per capita exceeded, albeit marginally, that of France and Germany; furthermore, there was a significant reduction in the gap in income per capita terms between the UK and USA. This period also saw high rates of economic growth in the Pacific Basin with, first, Japan and then South Korea emerging as major economies as globalisation produced widespread economic development in the world economy.
Cock and ball torture (CBT) is a sexual activity involving application of pain or constriction to the male genitals. This may involve directly painful activities, such as wax play, genital spanking, squeezing, ball-busting, genital flogging, urethral play, tickle torture, erotic electrostimulation or even kicking.[1] The recipient of such activities may receive direct physical pleasure via masochism, or emotional pleasure through erotic humiliation, or knowledge that the play is pleasing to a sadistic dominant. Many of these practices carry significant health risks.Cock and ball torture (CBT) is a sexual activity involving application of pain or constriction to the male genitals.
