TOPIC: Why so many spam accounts?

Why so many spam accounts? 5 years 5 months ago #1133703

I'm pretty curious about why the website operator doesn't implement a system that gets rid of the spam advertisement accounts.

Why are there even spam accounts on this site?

1. If you have any suggestions to resolve this issue then make a suggestion...
2. Because they think they will get somewhere by spamming a gaming forum with their shit.

We already have a system that gets more accurate as we continue to report these spam accounts. A lot of these spam topics are caught and marked as unapproved and are never seen by regular users.

Maybe make a bot that auto bans people that post links in the title and add it as a TOU rule.

No. Of course I don't mean like the system you already have, because that's obviously not working very well for ya. Just a quick idea. Maybe do so people can't post links until they're at 5-10 posts. That would definitely help

Does it really hurt you that much?
As people mentioned before you don't even know if the system works because last time I checked you aren't a forum staff so you cannot see those posts.

That might affect new players who are trying to transfer vip or boosters to another account, which requires a forum user link.

But what happens when people register an account to post a report/appeal/bug report/refund request and cannot post a link to videos/screenshots because of this?

This is a bad idea in the long term. Once the people that are responsible for the spam accounts know about the new system, they will start to abuse its obvious flaws. They will try to disguise their links, so that they are still plausible for humans but harder to detect for your system. Example:

Instead of posting links like this: "www.example.com/some/path"
they will start to post them like this: "www . example . com / some / path"

Of course you could improve your system over time to detect those "links" aswell, but once you accomplish that the "attackers" will just find another way of hiding their links. Instead of wasting time to implement such a system, we should focus on improving the systems that are already in place by continuosly reporting spam posts.

Such a system would also be a burden for new users of course...

Of course there could be made exceptions to ZARP links, gyazo, and other mainstream photo/video providers.

I was going to say what Martin said, but the best way to tackle it IMO is to do what a lot of Reddit communities do, where you can only reply to threads until you've reached enough "karma" (here it would be posts) so after 5 replies to topics you could then start your own?

This would be an inconvenience for new forum users that want to appeal punishments or apply for staff positions but have no interest in other forum activities. Would it really be worth it in the end?

Depends on the amount. (5 was purely a number I threw out there) clearly these bots only make 1 post before leaving (never commenting), so even if we had a notice saying "You have to comment on a post once before posting your own thread" when they try to post I think it would cut the bots completely.

Better yet, have it so if they join and try to post (as in a thread, not a comment) under 2 minutes into joining, it applies the 1 comment before they can post rule. So people who want to report staff are still able to (it will take them more than 2 minutes to write a report) without commenting first.

IMO I think it would be worth a shot, you'd get less spam and more community interaction, if what I said above is even possible.

The system works, i get loads of emails every day alerting me of unapproved posts which are always advertisements (that means regular users will never see them), and im only a moderator in one section, so there should be a tonne more in total, that you will never see :)

I don't think you understand not all of them have links, not all of them even make any sense. And yes they do comment on other threads

The system we have currently works fine, like 10% of spam posts made get past our system. I wake up every morning and see a LOT of spam posts caught in our filter. There's no need for a change, what would help would be you stop responding to the posts, bumping them back up.
