Unless the teacher says you shouldn’t have a phone out they don’t care about them

I’m in a USA high school but it’s a pretty good school in the terms of giving freedom to students, for example my math teacher doesn’t care if you do your work in class because he just assumes you know it if you are not doing it.

From what I have heard most other USA schools do not allow phone use at all and will take them away at first sight.

I know in middle school they hated phones and would collect it as soon as anyone had it out.

But that is mainly on how the schools are like in the USA in middle school they treat you like a child/prisoner and in high school they treat you like an adult

Taking pictures/videos tho is strictly prohibited and if you get caught you're fucked.
One of my classmates took a picture of a teacher & put it in his Instagram story..
