If I go afk mining in gmod and put my laptop to sleep mode will I carry on mining?

If you put it on sleep, no. The best you can do is turn off your screen if you have that option of course.

What Richard said basically, when I used to AFK mine that one time to try it (hated it), I turned off my monitor and all my RGB peripherals.
