TOPIC: Regarding The Update

Regarding The Update 1 year 7 months ago #1406192

Hello, I was supposed to make this post last night but I had too many things on my plate and so I chose to leave this until today so I could figure out what I wanted to say just to make things as transparent as possible and clear up any confusion regarding performance or why the update was slightly delayed.

So firstly I wanted to apologise for the delay in the release on the update, this is my fault and although it could have been avoided I will explain how and why it wasn't. So to begin with of course, I took over from Clarky as the main map developer and as a result the responsibility of making sure everything was compiled and ready fell onto me. Being that portions from the server in both pre-update and update relate to the map it was important I got this done...

To ensure this would happen I got the map to a finished state, fully compiled it and organised a testing session for Monday 3rd April, which all went smoothly, bar a bug which caused the server to crash which was immediately fixed. So once I finished fixing all the reported bugs I began compiling the map, which began compiling at 9AM on Friday 7th April.

Now usually it would take me a few hours to compile the map, from the few full compiles I did it was anywhere from 3-5 hours depending on settings and of course the time would go up the further into production the map got. So I chose to compile the map at this time before I went to work under the presumption that it would of course be finished like I had been every other time I tried before. Here's where things got a bit sticky, once I had finished work and gotten home the map was only about 3 quarters of the way through the compile process, which was odd because it had already had 8 and a bit hours to finish. I decided to let it continue anyway assuming it would easily be finished by midnight, which it hadn't.

I went to bed and woke up the following morning to see that it hadn't finished, which is where the whole situation became a bit of a ohfuck.png moment. I had to go to work so chose to let it carry on again and check in on it on my lunch break, shockingly it hadn't finished and so I chose to cancel it and sent a message to the CM team trying to figure out an alternative.

This is where the legend Richard comes out of the woodwork and manages to compile the map within 4 hours. Effectively saving the update, I cannot thank him enough for doing what he did on a last second notice. This is the reason that the update was effectively delayed by only an hour or so, but we got it done and I am grateful that although it was a clunky start we got it done.

As for the performance issues, this is probably the thing people are more concerned about and so I will try to make this as concise as possible. I essentially had accidentally put an extra 0 in the fog distance, basically it's so large you are rendering the entire map all at once, same for a lot of the props. This is all fixed now and I hope to push this "hotfix" in the next couple of days, but I need to get it tested and hopefully I can put the mines back into the map as I think we narrowed the compile problem down to that.

Thank you all again for the positive feedback on the map and a special thank you to those who have reported bugs already, I have got a list and I am already working my through them for the hotfix.

Although I hate doing this, I am going to do it anyway...

TL;DR
The map compiling stopped for seemingly no reason, we think we've identified the reason and had to release the map without the mines as a result. Richard saved the day and compiled the map in record time, almost melting his laptop in the process. Performance issues will be fixed very very soon.

Alongside this hotfix, I am going to be working with Chute on improving the prizes from the weapon, BP, cash eggs as well as some better prizes in the egg drop minigame as I think paying 10k gems to potentially get a Striker-12 as an example is incredibly shit, let alone sometimes not even getting a prize.

appreciate the apology Nafe, you didn't have to but regardless I understand the frustrations this has put you under and I can be partly to blame for this however in the end, we got a great update out and already discussing some big plans for the next one in Summer

Imagine not having the patience to wait an hour for an update and putting developers under blast due to unforeseen issues and things out of their control

you do not have to apologize for anything, the map is the best map zarp has ever seen and I respect you and clarky for it, you have spent so much time and all i have seen is a positive response, you should be proud and not apologizing, the update is great one question does trash spawn in the dumpsters?

In fairness I made this apology because I felt bad and to my knowledge nobody actually really (seriously) complained about the delay, which was a refreshing experience to say the least lol.
