Feedback no one asked for 1 year 8 months ago #1389979

Hey there, you might've seen me on the server during the last few weeks :) . I've got about 20 hours of playtime so far and I just wanted to give some feedback (if anyone will ever care for it) from the point of view of a new player on the server. If nothing else, perhaps this thread will allow more people to voice their opinions on some of these subjects. If I get any details wrong, feel free to publically shame me. I'll even send you my credit card details as compensation.

Custom Roles
The first thing that really confused me was the custom roles on the server. After learning them all and getting to play with them, I think they're a fun addition (with the exception of a few).

I think an explanation for all the custom roles should be included in the f4 menu somewhere - the message that appears at the start of the round can go unnoticed fairly easily and then you end up with players who mess up rounds because they don't know what they're supposed to do. Even if they want to learn about their role, I don't believe there's a command or screen to easily read up on em (I've only seen an explanation in the forums here).

Besides that, a couple of the roles themselves could really use some changes in my opinion.
  • Jester - Nobody enjoys jester ending their round, I think the concept is good but the outcome of killing him is bad
  • Old man - Can win on both T and inno sides, which means you have nothing to do all round except wait for someone to hit you so you can kill them back. Yeah his goal is described as "just surviving", but in reality that isn't a fun way to play a round.
  • Mad alchemist - Is fun, but people just kill randomly with him to get bodies to use. I believe this isn't allowed but the explanation for the role doesn't give a definitive answer. Besides, for traitors, getting killed by an alchemist just feels like you've been RDMed (since you believe you're safe until you're caught by innos).
  • Deputy - Maybe better than being just pure inno, but over all feels lackluster and rarely gets to serve a purpose from what I've seen.

Rank/Level
My honest first impression is that the entire level system is stupid. Maybe it's just because I'm used to the system of another server that has already shut down (where rank was based on playtime and you only had about 8 ranks total), but it seems very silly to me that there are 40 different levels, with no clear indication for which level is higher or lower than another, with colors that repeat themselves, and names that mean nothing practical (besides rookie, maybe).

I have no expectation that levels will be changed. They seem to exist for at least 2 years now, and there is no way any of the veteran players with P2 or even P4 would appreciate getting their progress reset.

As much as the whole system bothers me, I would be perfectly fine with ignoring it except for one blaring issue - ranks show up before the names of players in chat. Not only can this cause confusion with ranks that have red or blue colors, it just makes a complete mess of the chat when multiple people type.

I also don't like how many custom weapons can be picked through rank that can't be gotten naturally during a game, but I guess that could be more incentive for players to rank up

Custom (_zarp) Maps
Not much to say besides I think all the vending machines are a hindrance on the maps.

Custom weapons
Most just feel completely useless in my opinion, if not completely bugged. Pardon me for not remembering all the names.
  • Single-shot Snipers - Are all basically the same, and I'm pretty sure their noise level is bugged (they sound silenced when fired from the top of the mc b5 lighthouse)
  • The 4-shot sniper - Is actually pretty fun, but it seems extremely glitched. Sometimes I pick it up and it's perfectly fine, other times it looks fine but produces a missing texture when I hit someone, other-other times using the scope just completely hides the screen and makes it unusable. Also, pressing T while holding it brings up a useless statistics menu for the gun which is annoying. The first time I accidentally opened it it took a good minute to figure out which button I accidentally pressed, and also it over-rides the T team chat button.
  • Pistols - I avoid them like they're radioactive. Except the colt - that one's fun :)
  • SMGs / ARs - For the most part are fine.. I personally don't like them nearly as much as vanilla TTT weapons, but some have their uses (STEN / famas / AK, all being good)
  • Shotgun - Just feels really weak over all.. Seems like it could take 3 body shots to kill someone

Game crashing
I'm sure this issue is known - sometimes half the server has their game crash at the same time. It seems to happen fairly regularly, I've had it happen like 3-4 times in one game session.

T/D shop
A lot of the items are bugged and completely unusable. T shops are fine and filled with fun items, D shops seem very lackluster in comparison and usually there's barely anything custom worth buying (besides tranq for the lols)

Minecraft b5
One of the bigger elephants in the room. Me personally - I'm fine with the map. I think it's fun, just not 24/7 and with 0 variety.
When I asked a lot of the regular members why they pick only minecraft, most of the responses were either "It's the only good map", or "If we switch off it then everybody leaves". I believe the second point is moot seeing as the majority of top ranked servers don't run the map 24/7 (looking at gametracker). The first point is harder to argue.. If people like the map, they should be able to vote for it - I just personally feel like it degrades the server and I find it a shame people aren't willing to give other maps a try.

I'd like to finish my post by once again saying that it's if everything I said gets completely ignored. I can tell the server has a community that has stuck with it for many years, and there's no way a new dude like me can know all the nuances of it. I just wanted to share my experience as a new member, and I once again invite other people to express their own opinions on the subjects I mentioned - Maybe if enough regulars will discuss it here, it will change for the better in the server :).

I'd like to start by saying thank you for taking the time to give us your thoughts on TTT. I'll do my best to comment on everything you have mentioned to provide some clarity as well as my own thoughts.

You are able to see what the roles do in-game by going f1 -> Advanced Settings and either go use the dropdown box to select a role or flick through the pages. Albeit this isn't very intuitive but it's there if you miss the message at the start of the round.

Besides that, a couple of the roles themselves could really use some changes in my opinion.
  • Jester - Nobody enjoys jester ending their round, I think the concept is good but the outcome of killing him is bad

We plan to change the jester so it doesn't end the round and instead respawns the jester in place of their killer.

  • Old man - Can win on both T and inno sides, which means you have nothing to do all round except wait for someone to hit you so you can kill them back. Yeah his goal is described as "just surviving", but in reality that isn't a fun way to play a round.

  • I do agree that playing as Old Man is very boring to play, I'd rather be literally any other role personally. I spoke to Callum about the Old Man a few weeks ago and he suggested a potential change to the role (to be honest I can't remember exactly what he said but I remember thinking it was a good idea, I'll ask him when he's online).

  • Got to be honest even I got confused by this role when I came back to the server. I'll suggest a rulechage in tonight's meeting to clarify this, as well as updating the role information on the server to make this more clear to players.

  • Deputy - Maybe better than being just pure inno, but over all feels lackluster and rarely gets to serve a purpose from what I've seen.

  • I personally don't mind the deputy role. Between the choices of being innocent or being innocent with a chance to be detective I'd take the chance every time.

The level system is something that will remain untouched, as it has remained the same for years (as you said yourself). One thing I am trying to do in future updates is add unlock weapons at lower levels rather than following "new weapon every 3 levels" trend, so that new players will actually be able to use the new content that is added. Another thing is double EXP has been enabled on the server for the past few months to make it easier for new players to level up and unlock new weapons. I personally don't see the ranks showing up in chat as an issue and see it as a neat little feature.

    Custom (_zarp) Maps
Not much to say besides I think all the vending machines are a hindrance on the maps.

The custom maps and the perk machines are unrelated. The _zarp maps are those that have been made/editied by our former Community Manager. The perk machines are on all of the maps (or should be) and act as a way for players to spend their diamonds on one-round buffs. I don't see them as a hindrance as they can be easily ignored for those who don't want to use them.

    • Shotgun - Just feels really weak over all.. Seems like it could take 3 body shots to kill someone

Whilst I do agree that some of the weapons aren't as powerful as others, I think the vast majority of them can be used to a decent standard. I believe there's only a few single shot snipers on the server currently (the M24 and the Intervention), both of which are essentially the same, one just looks a lot cooler than the other. In the coming update more guns of this type are being added, which should hopefully spread some variety amongst this gun type.

The pistols... yeah... I tend to only use the Tec9 or the deagle/colt as they feel really satisfying to use. The other pistols at least do their job as being a secondary weapon, and aren't actually that bad at cleaning kills.

When I was server owner in the past I found it hard getting the shotguns in the place I wanted. They were either OP one-shotting machines or literally unusable, and either way received nothing but complaints. I think they are in a "decent" spot at the moment, though I do agree that some small buffs are needed so they can at least compete with other weapons on the server.

    Game crashing
I'm sure this issue is known - sometimes half the server has their game crash at the same time. It seems to happen fairly regularly, I've had it happen like 3-4 times in one game session.

This is the first time I'm hearing of this and I have never crashed whilst playing, so any sort of information about these crashed would be great to determine what is causing them.

    T/D shop
A lot of the items are bugged and completely unusable. T shops are fine and filled with fun items, D shops seem very lackluster in comparison and usually there's barely anything custom worth buying (besides tranq for the lols)

We have been looking at these shops and have removed some unused weapons from them, and changed the ones that are too powerful. A list of the items that are bugged with a description of what is bugged about them would be great. Also we are happy to take suggestions for new Detective items and I agree there isn't much going on in there shop.

    Minecraft b5
One of the bigger elephants in the room. Me personally - I'm fine with the map. I think it's fun, just not 24/7 and with 0 variety.

There's nothing we can do about people not wanting to play other maps. The best you can do is ask what other map they wouldn't mind playing and !nominate it. At least if another map is voted, people can't nominate minecraft for a few map changes, giving you plenty of rounds on other maps.

I'd like to finish my post by once again saying that it's if everything I said gets completely ignored. I can tell the server has a community that has stuck with it for many years, and there's no way a new dude like me can know all the nuances of it. We will always appreciate your opinions on the server. I hope this post has at the very least cleared some things up for you. If you have any suggestions for the server, make sure you suggest them here and it will be looked at by either myself or Callum.
