Alright, so as you all probably know one of the biggest problems with any GMOD server is people using props to either lag or crash it. Due to limitations with the source engine and how the physics engine functions there is not a definite fix for the problem presented.

However there are things we can do to make it harder for users to crash the server with props. However it can come with the price of harming the way that you users build, We could create a system that makes it impossible to crash the server but at the same time it would make it very very hard to build.

So I've designed a system that I feel will make it basically impossible to crash the server with props, but at the same time not interfere with the servers building dynamic.

FAQ:

How does it work?
Simple! Unless a prop is frozen it will not be able to collide with other props or players. Once you freeze the prop it will once again function normally and collide with everything, unless you use the nocollide tool to nocollide it with specific entities. In-order to not effect building once you pick up a prop it will have it's collisions re enabled, and collisions will be disabled when you drop the prop..

I have a game that only works with unfrozen and collided props, is my game now broken?
When We created the system We planed for this to happen and inorder to allow you guys to make these types of contraptions/games. An Enable Collision Tool has been added. Look for it in the tool menu and it will allow you to turn on collisions for up to 5 props, while those props are unfrozen. The setting will save post dupe so all you need to do is spawn you dupe Enable Collisions on the props you want an redupe you creation.

This new system sucks, do we have to keep it?
Yes, the system I've made is the best way that We have come up with to combat the prop crash issues. But that doesn't mean that We don't want to hear why you don't like the new system. Please write up what you don't like about the new system and post it bellow. Chances are there is a way that We can adapt the system to make it easier to build, but without losing the functionality that the server needs.

Will this be added to Server One or Just stay on Server Two?
Yes, the plan is to gauge the communities options about the new prop protection system, implement ideas to make it better and fix any bugs that exist. Once we have done that and we feel like you guys are satisfied with it. We will add it on the Server One. But what this means is that we need your guy's feedback, things you like and don't like and specialty any bugs you find. Please leave a comment in the thread bellow and we appreciate you helping us test out this new system.

The main thing that I see as being fixed now is when you blow up a base and it blocks itself off with all the no collided props.

it will be impossible to base if this is implemented with nocolided props when blowup because the only real protection we had was having big bases that fall when milked so that they must raid without one

but now aslong as some one has a milkor (pretty much everyone) they can raid with ease any base as all the props will be no collided

having this new system i believe will make baseing almost impossible for people

unless you find a way round this

Don't forget welding ligts togheter, should also be no collided when unfrozen.


One thing it will destroy are these gates you use with gravity gun.

If you have a "Casino" as a hobo, dropping the ball will instead go under all props as it is no collided. One fix is that you can write a command and that prop you're looking at will get collision again. This will make it impossible for them to crash the server as their props are usually under the ground when propspamming.

If you read the whole thread you would have seen I already made a way that you can enable collisions on up to 5 props with the Enable Collision tool.

As for the explosions weapons. You still should be able to build fine as the explosive weapond dont unfreeze the wholebase only the part the gets blown up. You still can have internal props that will be collided. I feel like this is a worthwhile trade off because it solves a major problem witch is the lag that is created when you blow up a massive base. But I will see if I can come up with a system that makes it slightly better for the basers. Now it adds an intersting aspect because people have to design multiple layered bases.

There's also another issue. When the admins freeze props to reduce lag, it unfreezes all the base and makes it no-collide.

I had this type of system on my server, it worked like a charm and i never had problems when building or prop push
it even made building so much easier since the prop you were holding was nocollided so it didnt interfere with other props only world objects like walls, streets, doors etc...

Make it collide with the world and player, not props.
I don't think world and player collision are that much.
This keeps the bases defend-able.
