As a miner myself, the demote system is fine as it is, its your fault if you died from a nuke and now are AFK at spawn; you shouldn't have the spot if you're not using it.

If you want to keep hold of your precious pickaxe then don't go AFK for hours on end, simple rule of thumb; if you can't afford to lose it then don't use it.
