I'm sure I could think of a hundred ways to role play not getting killed down in the mines if it came down to it. Long story short be alert when mining and don't sit down there like a depressed teenager in their room.

They may have been made to lose by losing them due to mutants RDMing is not the right way to lose them. If you're trying to make something risky using rulebreaking to thin out the numbers is not a good idea.
