Conflicted on this.

Like you mentioned, it's been suggested multiple times. They're not really going to change their mind.

I remember it being mentioned a while ago about this and it said that this has been done before, and that it really didn't pan out. Not sure if it was Chute himself who said that, or if it was mentioned in the general thread about Classic a while ago.

That said, their biggest grievance, and the reason they didn't go ahead with Classic, was because no-one wanted Classic if there wasn't going to be a new database used. Which the CM team weren't willing to do; don't remember their exact reasons but I think it was something along the lines of it being somehow problematic to implement.
Their idea of Classic was that it would basically remove a large number of items. They'd still be in your inventory, you just wouldn't be able to use them, or trade them.

I'd love to see it happen, I just don't think they're going to budge on it.
