I've decided to accept this appeal, because, as you said, not many people were aware that this was indeed exploiting, including a few staff. You didn't mean any harm by this and although the punishment is completely valid, a verbal warning would have sufficed. Know that if you attempt to use this exploit again, you very likely will be punished.
