Imo this role is there to have an easier communication between the users, the staff teams and the CM Team. Sure you need users but I don't see why dedicated people such as Richard shouldn't go for it because they already have "power and influence". It's supposed to let you voice your opinions with everyone and as long as you feel you can add something to the community with good suggestions and ideas you should go for it.
