The thermals now have a solid hitbox for quite a while actualy. The ion left click being such a huge projectile came out and probably directly hit the thermals placed on your body on its way out thus causing the explosion and killing you in the process.

Now wether or not this should be considered your fault for having thermals on your body in the first place or if that should be considered a " glitch " is up to the client sided community managers.

Edit : Or coud be what Na1 mentioned since the skybox on top of the buildings is very low and the ion tends to arch upwards when you fire it.
