I don't see how you don't eat nor drink from dawn until sunset is going to help anything. Moreover after that, eat and drink like a king; that's basically a contradiction. A simpler way would be donating food, clothes to the poor.

I am not one for telling off beliefs though.

It's not supposed to help.
First, I guess they eat like "kings" because it's also sort of a "celebration".
Not eating during day is supposed to teach people to be humble and to have empathy for those who have nothing to eat.

Would have linked you a recent video of a podcaster about ramadan, trying to teach while being funny but it's in french so :c

It does help, Ramadan is a month of charity and huge amounts of zakat (charity) is given during the month of ramadan, and about "Eat like a king" during Iftaar (After sunset) is not what we are supposed to do, its what people do.
