The official matchmaking is horrible as of now, smurfs left and right and cheaters that manage to screw with server side stuff to the point of it being anything but fun to play the game. I'd say you were lucky to get ranked up more so than there being any skill involved as even the really high tier ranks are currently filled with bad players whilst some really good players are lurking in the lower ranks.
