Remove First Past The Post voting, add Alternative voting.

How would it benefit the server:

I'm so irritated by the way the Bloc42 poll went, and it's all because of First Past The Post voting.

Here are the reasons why:

1: More than half of the community is not happy.

In First Past The Post voting, you get some thing you can vote on, and you can choose one and only one vote. This is a huge problem. In the poll itself, I would say that around 40% voted for Bloc42, 30% voted for Rockford, 20% voted for EvoCity, and 10% voted for Evilmelon. Whilst Bloc got the most votes, that's still 60% of the server not happy with the decision.

2: Strategic Voting

The thing about voting is that it's supposed to make you vote for something you want, but under First Past The Post, it encourages Strategic Voting. I.E., voting for something you don't want because it is more popular, and hence it will have more of a chance of getting through. I believe that we would have more votes for EvoCity and EvilMelon if we didn't have FPTP.

3: The Spoiler Effect

If for example, people who voted for Evilmelon or EvoCity, want their 2nd choice to be Rockford, basically, they are just hurting their own vote. Because they just removed votes off of Rockford for a smaller map, dividing their votes.

Literally none, however, maybe it could be hard to code.

Additional notes:

If we had Alternative Voting, we wouldn't have had this shitstorm about Bloc on the forums.

And if you think Alternative Voting cannot work, fun fact: It functions in the Republic of Ireland and New Zealand.

EDIT: Many people said that they're okay with Bloc42 when I made this suggestion. Look, I wanted Bloc42, but Bloc42 isn't the focus of my suggestion. My suggestion is about more democratic and fairer voting.

Yeah, it has always shitted me off they use First past the post voting.

The elimination system would work fine. Whittling it down to 2 candidates would mean that the clear majority would be evident.

I saw those two videos before you posted this and I totally agree. It would require more effort than a standard vote but would yield better, fairer results. It isn't such a problem in meetings when the choice is yes or no, but sometimes you get more options, and then it might be sometimes better to host the vote on for example www.demochoice.org instead of on strawpoll, since it can give you a fairer vote. For example, if you had to vote for a number 1, 2 or 3, you like 3 but 2 is more popular, which you kind of like you can just vote 3 as your first choice and 2 as your second. Problem solved. The downside to demochoice is that limiting the vote from getting leaked is hard, just like in strawpoll. If you really like, you can limit who can vote via e-mail, but that's leaking private information + it takes too long.
If anyone can find a better website, make sure to post it.

So how would you want to get 50+% of the community behind one and one map only? Does the 'alternative' system have second choices and stuff? Don't have to time to check the vids, just greatly interested by the topic, as it seems everyone voted just to join the bandwagon, just like they're all suddenly on the hatetrain.

In Alternative Voting, you rank your candidates from most favorite to least favorite, and it doesn't need strategic voting.

Even if this was in the recent map poll, bloc would of probably still won lol
