The cough virus was something that patched in an hour, I don't know where or how it was started but someone managed to get something implemented into garrys mod where this one player could spread this virus from server to server.

What happened was when a player joined a server their chat would say *cough* and then a coughing sound would play, it does this periodically and spreads from player to player and server to server. It would also put '!!!' in front of the servers name so it gets bumped to the top.
