Car advice 3 months 3 weeks ago #1419567

Evening zarpers,

Me and a friend are considering fixing/modding a car as a summer project, we're both pretty set on the 2008 JAGUAR XF (Specs) because they are often sold at police auction or in poor condition (and also because its sexy af).

Im wondering if anyone here has experience with fixing cars or with the jaguar specifically - how it handles high mileage, how expensive the parts would be etc. Any advice is appreciated because its our first time trying something like this.

Great car. I had a 2009 jaguar XF 4.2 416HP and remember it very well. i bought a lot of parts for this car cheaply because parts from ford fit the jaguar. the interior of the car is also great for this vintage. overall, i recommend the car depending on what engine you want, but if it's not a problem for you to spend a lot of money on fuel, i highly recommend the 4.2.

Fuel cost isnt really an issue, I probably wont be doing long commutes with it and will use it occasionally on a track or just with mates as a memory car I can look back to. Ill look into the 4.2 because engine power is a priority, it would depend if i can find any in fixable condition as one of the good things about the 2008 is that they are always being seized by police lol.

Regarding the interior, it was one of the main reasons why i love the car so much. Especially the veneer and design of the dash itself, the display looks like a 2010 flash game but im sure I can upgrade that to something a bit more bareable.

Sam the sausage "owns" multiple cars and has to ask his melaninoligist to fix them when anything goes wrong, knowledge is not necessary...

Not sure how much has changed over the last few years but I remember the parts for that car being pretty expensive for someone who is just ''fixing'' it up. They sell them a lot because the cost of the parts doesn't really equal out to the amount it would cost to get a newer or different car. I would have a little browse to check out part lists and prices before setting your heart on that car but if you got the money then do it. The Engine bay can be pretty tight in some spots but not different really. It seems a lot of car part dealers see the word Jagguuuur and think Money Money Money.

Subaru BRZ is an alright track starter car with plenty of available parts.
Porsche Boxster ( If you're looking for a name )
Then there is the Hondas I think its like the SI for track cars.

This could all be garbage information now but it was all just shit I remember from a few years back, things change so no idea if its still relevant.

Best advice i can give when working on a car which is in the higher price classes, check model numbers on parts.
A lot of them share parts with cheaper manufacturers, like for example the Lamborghini Murciélago uses the same wheel bearings (and most likely more parts) as some Volkswagens and Audi's since they are shared under the VW group.
It's always good to check those things as getting a "Genuine Part" can be 10x as expensive as the same part from a "cheaper" brand.

Since Jaguar is part of the Tata Motors Group you can expect to find their parts shared under but not limited to: Tata, Jaguar and Land Rover.

Considering those things you can most likely always find a good project car within the VW Group or R-N-M Alliance (Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi) since there's plenty of shared parts on cheaper models making them more affordable to work on, of course depending on model and spec.

So pick any car you like, if you find one you like do some research on its parent company or shared brands to figure out where you can pull parts from if needed.

Here's a few of the major car groups:

Ps: I have no idea if these things have been said before since i couldn't be bothered checking all the comments <3
